Captive wildlife attractions: Dolphin Discovery, Isla Mujeres, Mexico.

Over the past 10 years (or more) the travel industry has begun a journey of awareness about the ethics of animal attractions. However, back in 2010 I had been backpacking around Central America and ended my trip at a hotel next door to Dolphin Discovery in Mexico. At the time I was a product manager for a tour operator who was just beginning to think more about this topic. Wandering into this attraction one day was a defining moment on my responsible travel journey.

Miss Rachel. An inspirational story from Belize to celebrate International Women’s Day.

Created out of the dreams of the previous government, the new settlement of Mahogany Heights was supposed to represent new hope and a new life for Belize City dwellers whose impoverished living conditions left them struggling to survive. A bureaucratic mess up regarding land rights and a change of government later, the now dilapidated village has an air of ghost towns past.  Over the past 5 years resident nurse, Rachel Vega, has set out to singlehandedly change this.
